Punitive Damages

  • Jul 18, 2008
  • Post a comment

I'm not political, I don't get my feathers ruffled over the typical socio-economic issues. But, this morning I boiled up just a little while listening to the news on NPR. Apparently a woman living in Malibu recently won a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Motrin for a peculiar case of blindness that occurred when her child took the drug. The probability of such a case occurring at all, let alone leading to permanent blindness, is over 1 in a million. And yet, the maker's of Motrin were held entirely accountable, and charged to pay the woman roughly 1 billion dollars in punitive damages.

I don't argue that the woman shouldn't be paid for punitive damages. I simply argue that 1 billion dollars should never be allowed to happen. It's wrong, it's greedy, it's evil.

America has adjusted to the idea of punitive damages like a an accidental lottery. Going to the hospital? Hope that the doctor fucks up the procedure so you can sue the hospital for a million dollars. How about a miscarriage? That dead baby is worth 10 mil if you play your cards right? I don't understand why the efficacy of lawsuits is the norm, how did that come to happen? It's an offshoot of the "stealing from the rich" mentality. The single mom victim fighting the big, rich, corporate wealth, who wouldn't root for the mom?

But, what Americans don't realize is they're really stealing from themselves. Because of the vast amount of punitive damages inflicted upon the medical community, drugs cost more to research, longer to develop, and not many risks are being taken. This all trickles down to the consumer. Less effective medicines, higher prices, and fewer cures. I say, let's roll the dice, take the 1 in a million chance that you AREN'T going to be affected by Motrin, and agree to NOT SUE if you are.

Anyway, if you don't like my rant, you might like these rants found at omega 3 benefits and the vitamin shoppe.

Out of Steam

This is my last blog post of the day and I might as well say I'm out of steam. To be creative I've decided to stop using commas for this post to see what happens. I might have to conform my sentences in order to make a grammatically correct post without any commas. Than again I might just let the sentences run just to see if commas make that much of a difference.

Anyway it's time to talk about the health blog world. There's thousands nay millions of health blogs out there. Every one has a different style and different opinions. This leads me to believe there's a lot of misinformation in the health world. Oh well. The only thing that seems true and good to me is the paleo diet. Or more accurately the Primal diet which is similar to the paleo diet but includes and exercise plan as well.

Alright enough with the health. Let's talk about salads. Salads have lettuce which is awesome. You can replace the lettuce in a salad with spinach which is even better because spinach has that wonderful nutrient CoQ10 great for energy production. A salad is a great way to bulk up a meal without adding to many calories. You can get the same amount of protein in a salad as you would in a hamburger. But of course veggies and lettuce are a much better accompaniment to meat than french fries.

Nary a Multivitamin Left

In all honesty, I have run out of multivitamins to talk about. Centrum, Vitalife, The Master Formula. It turns out I haven't tried to many multivitamins after all....

Wait!!!!

Kids' vitamins!

I do know a little about kids multivitamins. Everyone is familiar with the flinstones multivitamins. They actually taste a bit like candy, kids love them. But if you really want to go with hardcore candy vitamins kids can't get enough of, I suggest Gummy Vitamins.

Gummy vitamins certainly aren't going to help you abs on a high fat diet. They're loaded with sugar. But hey, at least they are filling your kids up with the essentials.

The only problem with gummi vitamins is they are expensive. For the nutrition you are getting in one little bottle of gummy vitamins, you could buy a whole month of a superior capsule multivitamin (like the master formula). That will help you when you are trying to figure our how to deal with stress.

Anyway, sorry my vitamin information is running a bit thin. I may change the topic of this blog next month. Hopefully to something more turbo charged, like laser cats.

Not a multivitamin

Each month I usually talk about a different multivitamin. However, I'm taking a break this month to discuss a serious issue in the health community. It's called orthorexia nervosa.

Orthorexia nervosa is an eating disorder, but not your typical gag-in-the-bathroom disorder. Orthorexia occurs when a healthy eater takes healthy eating habits to the extreme. The health "nut" avoids so many foods because of potential "harmful toxins" or "artificial additives" that they actually restrict many essential nutrients the body needs to grow healthy. Orthorexics become emasciated, they lose weight, muscle mass, and eventually serious health issues occur.

I don't know how wide spread ortherexia nervosa is in our current culture, but I believe the internet is perpetuating this disorder. There is such an abundance of misinformation on the web about what is and isn't healthy, if you took everyone's advice you wouldn't be able to eat anything!

So, that's my dish. Just be glad I didn't rave about vegans.

Also, check out this website that helps with how to find people on the internet. Very informative stuff.

Generic Vitamins Online

Everyone has heard of Centrum, many people have heard of Vitalife or Life Extension. Then there is the bevy of high grade multivitamins from independent sources.

But none of those are being reviewed today.

Today's multivitamin: Generic Vitamins Online.

Yes, they're the worst. You scan the internet and you see advertisements for %70 off the best names! Or Wholesale Discount!!!! These are true, but what you are getting is expired vitamins. Wholesale wharehouse internet companies buy the products that aren't good enough for the manufacturers to sell. The TV's with cracks in them, the IPods that have been rejiggered. And the vitamins that have expired. So, never buy from a wholesaler. Know where your vitamin source is. And be careful when buying vitamins online!

Vitalife

There are a number of vitamins out there who puff themselves up by claiming they are gender specific. Specifying gender to a vitamin is simply a marketing tool as most natural supplements do not contain any hormonal substances specific to gender. They simply contain more or less of a specific nutrient designated as "needed more" by one gender or the other, according to inconclusive studies.

This week's review: VITALIFE

Vitalife makes a multivitamin specifically for women (of course it's not, but they say it is). It comes in chocolate chew form. Basically, they put a double dose of calcium in the vitamin and paint the box purple, which makes it "feminine."

Aside from the sappy marketing the vitamin is actually a pretty decent little chew. Most multivitamins come in either pill or liquid form. Liquids (pretty much all of them) just taste awful, and many people have a problem swallowing pills, so this form of Vitalife offers up a nice little alternative. There is a slight problem that the chew form adds 60 calories to the vitamin, so you can't just pop down a dozed of these without ruining your calorie intake. But, for people who are squeamish about choking on pills I definitely suggest trying this out.

And while we're at it, a couple other things for you to try out are these health websites. The first is about how to relieve stress. The other one is a health blog similar to this. It reviews various health products and helps you buy vitamin capsules.

An introduction to multivitamins

There are a multivitude of multivitamins on the market today. Everything from cheap chinese-made rip off vitamins to elite extreme multivitamins made and designed for professional athletes.

This blog is an introduction to many of the vitamins out there. Each week I'll pick a multivitamin I've seen, and try to give the low down on what's really going on with it.

This week is: CENTRUM

Centrum is the litmus by which most multivitamins are measured. If the product is cheaper than Centrum, it's probably missing some key essentials, or most likely it is processed in China with poor-quality ingredients. If the product is more expensive than Centrum, there's a good chance it has some extra goodies useful to the body, often worth the price but the consumer must always be careful.
